  14. (980miles) long. It is formed by the union of 
  15. the Allegheny and Monongahela at Pittsburgh, 
  16. Pennsylvania, and flows South West until it 
  17. joins the river Mississippi at Cairo, 
  18. Illinois. The Ohio carries twice the freight 
  19. tonnage of the Panama Canal-bulk cargos such 
  20. as iron ore, oil, chemicals, metals, salt, 
  21. sand, gravel, and, especially, coal from West 
  22. Virginia, Indiana, Kentucky, and East Ohio 
  23. fields.
